Harvesting The Fruits of Your Labor

Now that harvest time is about to turn into Halloween, you don’t need to put on your “fright night” outfit in order to scare away the job-seeking blues.  Instead, think about what you have accomplished these ten months, and how you have tended to yourself, your needs and above all your career with the care of a well-tended crop about ready to yield it’s bounty.  Knowing what you want and making sure that you get it after all the hard work you’ve put into your job search, is a time to celebrate and yes, to give thanks to the one and only person that matters in this process, you.

We don’t spend nearly enough time being thankful to ourselves for well basically looking out for our own best interests.  That is not to say that you should not look out for the interests of others as altruistic as that sounds.  Let’s face it, if you can’t take care of yourself, you are in no position to take care of anyone else.  So looking out for your own needs and desires when it comes to your career and honoring what you’ve done right along the way even though you may not have landed the perfect job is the first step in thanking yourself for a job well done.

Sending out hundreds of resumes, following up on countless job leads, attending industry networking events are all activities that singularly may not add up to creating the perfect job opportunity for you but cumulatively, help you inch that much closer to your realizing your career goal.  So many people worry in fear of not finding or getting the perfect job or worrying they might lose the one they do have.  Instead you should be focusing on all that you are doing for yourself  in your efforts towards career advancement as a reward and not a punishment.

Beating yourself up about what you are not getting out of your career search is not going to help move you any closer towards realizing your career goals.  Taking time to acknowledge your efforts and really, cutting yourself a little slack will ease the stress and build the confidence you need to know that basically others may let you down, but in the end you know that you won’t.  You are your own best advocate in terms of what you want out of your career.  Sure you may listen to your mother, father, spouse, and even the boss you love to hate, but in the end you are the only one who has your best interest at stake.

Having the faith and confidence in knowing that you are going to take care of yourself and that you will never let you down no matter how tough the job market gets, is reassuring no matter what the outcome.  Finding the strength and courage to stick up for yourself and yes, pat yourself on the back for a job well done even though no one else is rallying to cheer you on, will in the end make you more resilient and ready to take on the world.  Harvesting the fruits of your labor means not only reaping the rewards of all of your hard work, but also thanking yourself along the way for making the journey a memorable one.
