Can Someone Move That Boulder Please?

Obstacles, we all face them.  Whether it’s the proverbial boulder in the road or the car that won’t start on your way to a meeting or, the 10th interview that will never lead to a job offer. We all have to face temporary road blocks in order to make it to the other side.  As frustrating as these setbacks seem, it is part and parcel of what we all experience as we grow and move towards our ultimate goals.  

In truth, it’s our reaction to these obstacles that either keep us stuck in the road, or in our car or by the phone waiting for that job offer.  Obstacles often paralyze us when what they are really intended to do is propel us into action.  Of course the way we in which choose to take action can also help or stall us in our efforts to advance.   Dwelling on how the boulder got there, why the car won’t start and why no one is offering you a job, are the very pebbles in the road that prevent us from taking a step ahead.  Your attitude about who and what you are worth and how really badly you want what is on the other side of that boulder, is what will make or break you in your efforts to succeed.

Obstacles, setbacks can and will effect your morale, your confidence and the very strength you need to realize your ambitions.  Training yourself to push through the invisible barriers which bind you to old ways of behaving and belief systems that no longer work, will help you to realize that your next, best career is right around the corner and it’s your way around that boulder that will help you get there. Pushing, pulling, resisting or waiting for someone to help you, will not make that rock move any quicker.  Navigating around it will.  Your agility is what will keep you on the path.   Keeping up and persevering will help you face your challenges in a bold new way.  Your keen desire in the face of any obstacle and your determination to stay focused on your goals and your mission is what will help you move around that boulder.  When you feel yourself sink to that most solemn place, when all you want to do is run and hide, that is when you need resolve and determination to remain focused on your goal.

When you’ve been on the 20th interview, posted your resume to 100 job boards and have exhausted your 500 + LinkedIn network, you truly wonder where that determination and perseverance will come from.  It comes from only one source and that source is you.  Your will to survive and to manifest your desires is all you need at times when you are most down.  Challenges are part of the process.  A not-always-nice part of the process, but one we are destined to overcome if we realize the obstacles or just that, a temporary bump in the road.

So when you think the best course of action is to sit it out, wait, hold your breath and worry, you are wrong.  Pick yourself up, move to the lowest point around the boulder and crawl your way to the other side.  Nothing is going to get you where you want to go faster than moving yourself.

High Growth, High Tech, All We Want is High Touch…

The world is beckoning, “Come Tweet With Me!”  MySpace, FaceBook, LinkedIn, Twitter have become household names in a span of a few years. The rate in which change happens used to be measured in decades, five year plans and terms of office. Now, we measure change in nano-seconds, or at least as fast as your last tweet. What is happening to the world of communication?  I don’t know if we should all be excited or mildly confused?   We know we have grown into a community that wants it quicker, faster, shorter, smarter, that we can boldly declare ourselves the “Now Generation!”

At no other time in our history, have we been a more global nation than we are today. Communication technology is a wonderful thing.  It will ultimately be responsible for creating some of the new wealth and booming economy and be responsible for an increase in jobs in the coming years like no other time before.  Rapid growth leads to rapid change.  Rapid change leads to more change, and that’s when we start to notice something has disappeared?   When high growth meets high tech we lose the one thing that really impacts us all, high touch.  In a world where picking up the phone is as novel a concept as flying to the moon on your lunch hour, we are in jeopardy of losing our ability to speak and to communicate on a unique and personal level.  

It’s great when we learn how Ashton Kutcher has just received 1 million  followers on Twitter, but what does that really mean to anyone? It’s not to say that the information technology era we are living in is completely void of “personality.”  But, we are missing the high touch that comes with personal contact.  Whether it’s working along side your co-worker or having dinner with your family, we all need, and on some level require, the presence of another living being. Virtual, does not need to imply “virtually no interaction.”  

The job market for example is changing with technology in a whole new way. Classified job advertisements in newspapers, circulars and trade magazines was for decades the standard way anyone ever used to really learn about jobs. Search firms, temporary agencies and your “personal network” provided other resources until the emergence of technology came to pass.  Today with the emergence of job boards, which have surprisingly only been around in the last 10 years, will soon be considered archaic, and will be replaced by new business practices such as “Twitter, SimplyHired, LinkedIn and other equally non-personal ways to seek out your next career.

Don’t get me wrong, running an online recruitment business for the past 8 years, I’m all for faster, better, smarter myself.  What I fear in all this is how far we are ultimately removing ourselves from personal interaction. The ability to converse with someone when we actually do get in front of an interviewer or more importantly, when we actually land the job is as important an aspect of communication that our last post on Facebook.

Is all this high growth, high tech without high touch the way the Now Generation prefers to communicate?  If so, it is a sad commentary on the evolution of media and communication in this generation no matter how remarkable our efforts to excel technologically have proven.  But, I am more hopeful than that.  In this world of faster, better, smarter we have ourselves to blame when we relay too heavily on technology to be the primary means by which we communicate.  The brilliance in this movement is the way in which we can reach the masses with our message so directly and so precisely hitting our exact target. What we need however, is to not lose sight of the one thing that matters, our ability to relate on a personal level to the people we physically come in contact with in all areas of our life.

The good news is that I know someone will create an APP that will turn the virtual into the personal, as we continue to enjoy our cyber-latte, reading our morning Kindle.

And here’s to embracing the “Now Generation!”

Back Again, This Time To Help The Job Seeker…

When we launched GLJ in 2001 we had a unique idea that what was needed in the world of online recruitment was a way to bypass the tens of thousands of resume submissions per posting and to find a unique way to “match” a candidate’s skill set with what the recruiter was actually looking for in a candidate. It was a novel idea, one trust me NO ONE was thinking of, and certainly no where did you see an example of how unique a concept it was.  Well fast forward, 2009 and GLJ, with it’s unique candidate to recruiter matching proposition, is once again reinventing itself.  You see in this market, and really in any market, no matter what your business, you constantly need to reinvigorate, reinvent and take advantage of the change that consumes us all.

It’s not like you need to do anything illegal or even mind shattering to be re-inventive, it just has to be 1) original, 2) resourceful and,  3) needed and can actually help an individual or a situation.  I’ve always approached any job no matter what the task with the notion, that if I can offer something to the equation where I can actually “help” then I was contributing something of real value.  How I value my services depended solely on the value I chose to place on my services and how much my client really needed my help.

It’s no different now.  No matter what you have to offer, you need to know and understand both the value you place on yourself and the value you want to present to your prospective employer.  It’s up to you to set the standard and your worth in this marketplace and not look for your future employer to help you out with that. 

At GLJ we are doing the same thing-we are re-establishing our worth and this time, we are gearing our efforts towards the job seeker and this time, from a different vantage point.  With all of the job boards, search engines, networking groups, etc boasting jobs, opportunities and the like, no one is really focusing on you, the job seeker and what you really need and want.  I’ve been asked millions of times for help with resume templates, ideas on how to write a resume, a bio and pull together a creative portfolio of work.  I know it’s hard to decipher the valuable from the fluff, but one thing my 20 plus years in recruitment, human resources and management have taught me is always be up front, treat the job seeker and prospective employee with respect and courtesy and never think because you are sitting behind the desk you hold the power and ability to determine the lives of others.  So, with all our collective experience, we are advising, providing guidance and doing what we do best, helping others.  We are giving back.  As we introduce new services through our Career Service Center, we are targeting what you, the job seeker and in some cases, the curious recruiter are looking to address, and we are giving out free career advise, career guidance, job networking assistance, and any burning question you have that is effecting your work life and your ability or inability to get the job life you seek.
